Base44 is an AI app builder owned by Wix. Describe your app in plain English, and it builds the frontend, database, user login and hosting for you, ready to publish.
Base44 is one of the fastest-growing AI app builders of 2026. You describe the app you want in plain English, and Base44 builds it for you, including the database, user login, backend logic and hosting. Wix bought the company in 2025, and it now competes head-to-head with Lovable, Bolt and Replit.
In this Base44 review, I'll cover how it works, what the plans really cost, where it shines, where it falls short, and who should use it. The review is updated for October 2026.
For this review, I built an affiliate program tracker on Base44's free plan without paying anything. The first version was ready in about four minutes, and one day's free credits were enough for a working, published app with an earnings chart. Along the way, I found a couple of bugs that the AI didn't catch on its own.

Base44 Review: Quick Verdict
- Best for: non-developers, founders and small businesses who want a working app with a backend without setting anything up
- Price: free plan; paid plans from $16 per month billed annually
- Free plan: enough to test Base44 and build a simple app, but the 5 daily credits ran out after three prompts in my test
- What it builds: React web apps with a managed database, user authentication, backend functions and one-click hosting
- Biggest strengths: everything is built in, and you can go from idea to a published app very quickly
- Biggest weaknesses: credit limits, and the backend, database and hosting stay on Base44
- My rating: 4.0/5
What Is Base44?
Base44 is an AI app builder, often called a "vibe coding" platform. Instead of writing code, you chat with an AI that builds and edits the app for you. Unlike many AI coding tools, Base44 includes the backend: a database, user accounts, file storage, server functions and hosting all come out of the box.
Base44 was started in early 2025 by Israeli developer Maor Shlomo as a solo project. It grew fast, and in June 2025 Wix acquired Base44 for about $80 million upfront plus performance-based payments. Base44 still runs as its own product. According to its founder, it passed $200 million in annual recurring revenue in August 2026, and Wix has named Base44 as a main driver of its growth.
How Base44 Works
Building an app with Base44 follows a simple loop:
- Describe your app. Write what you want, for example "a booking app for a tennis club where members can reserve courts and admins can manage time slots".
- Let the AI build it. In Build mode, Base44 creates the pages, the data structure and the logic. You see a live preview next to the chat.
- Plan in Discuss mode. Discuss mode lets you brainstorm and plan changes without building anything, and it uses fewer credits.
- Refine. Ask for changes in the chat, or use the visual editor to change texts, colors and layouts by hand. Manual edits don't use any credits.
- Publish. One click puts your app online on a Base44 subdomain or your own domain.
My Test: Building an App on Base44's Free Plan
To see what you really get without paying, I built an app on Base44's free plan. I didn't spend a cent, and I kept track of every credit.
The Prompt

I asked Base44 to build an affiliate program tracker, a tool I could actually use as a blogger. I left the AI model on Auto and the mode on Build. This was my full prompt:
Build an "Affiliate Program Tracker" for a blogger. Users log in and manage their own affiliate programs. Each program has: name, website, network (e.g. Impact, PartnerStack, Awin), commission type (recurring / one-time / flat), commission rate or amount, commission duration, cookie length in days, minimum payout, affiliate link, status (applied / approved / rejected / paused) and notes. Add a dashboard that shows the number of programs by status, total earnings this month and a list of programs waiting for approval.
The First Build: About 4 Minutes and 1 Credit
The first version was ready in about four minutes and used 1 message credit. Base44 named the app AffiliatePulse and built the login, the database, a dashboard and a programs page with search and status filters.

What surprised me was that the AI agent tested its own work. When the preview didn't load at first, it checked the errors, fixed them, and then clicked through the app: it created a program, logged a $150 commission and checked that the dashboard showed it.
It wasn't flawless, though. The agent said it had removed its test data afterwards, but the $150 commission was still on the dashboard. The preview also showed a "Rate limit exceeded" error once, which went away when I refreshed the page.

The agent says it removed the test data. It didn’t.
Bugs I Found Myself

- Deleting a program didn't delete its earnings. When I removed the test program, the dashboard still showed $150 in earnings with 0 programs, and the orphaned commission wasn't visible anywhere else in the app.
- The form only had a commission rate (%). My prompt asked for a rate or an amount, but there was no way to record a flat commission, such as $100 per sale.
Neither is a big deal for a demo, but they're a good reminder: an AI-built app can look finished and still have logic errors. Test edge cases, like deleting and editing records, before you rely on the app.
Fixing the Bugs: About 1.8 Credits
I described both problems in one prompt, and Base44 fixed them. The dashboard went back to $0, and the form got an option for a fixed amount. This fix cost about 1.8 credits, which was more than the whole first build. Credits are charged in fractions, based on how much work a change takes.
Publishing on the Free Plan
Publishing works on the free plan. The app went live on a base44.app subdomain, and because I asked for user accounts, visitors have to log in before they see anything. A custom domain requires a paid plan.
Tip: my ad blocker interfered with publishing. If publishing doesn't go through, turn your ad blocker off for base44.com.
Adding a Chart: Out of Credits for the Day

After each change, Base44 suggested next steps, such as a monthly earnings chart, importing data from Google Sheets and exporting programs as a CSV file. I picked the chart.
The agent built the chart and then found a bug in its own code: the months were stored in two different formats, so the chart always showed zero. It fixed the bug, filled the app with sample data to check the chart visually, and cleaned up afterwards. The chart works.
This request used about 2.2 credits, and the daily counter reached 5.01 of 5. Base44 then showed "0 credits remaining" with a countdown to the next day, together with an offer of 30% off yearly plans during my first 48 hours.

My Free Plan Results
- Cost: $0
- Time: under an hour, including testing and screenshots
- Credits used: about 5 message credits, which is the whole daily limit and a fifth of the monthly 25. No integration credits were used.
- Prompts: three (the first build, one bug fix and the chart)
- Result: a published app with login, a database, a dashboard, a searchable program list and an earnings chart
My take: Base44 is a good tool for non-technical people who want to build their own apps easily. It's not the tool I'd pick for my own projects, but it does what it promises. I don't know which AI model the free plan uses, because Base44 picks it automatically. My guess is that paid plans get better results, since the Builder plan and higher let you choose the model. Still, the free plan is plenty for testing and for simple apps.
What You Can (and Can't) Do on Base44's Free Plan
Based on Base44's pricing page and my own test:
What You Can Do
- Build up to five apps
- Use the built-in database, user login and analytics
- Publish your app on a base44.app subdomain
- Use built-in integrations, such as email and AI, with 100 integration credits per month
- Run the security scan
- Make manual edits in the visual editor, which don't use credits
What You Can't Do
- Use more than 5 message credits per day or 25 per month. In my test, the daily limit covered the first build and two changes.
- Connect your own domain, edit the code or remove the Base44 badge (Starter plan)
- Add backend functions, sync to GitHub, take payments with Stripe or choose the AI model (Builder plan)
Key Features
Built-In Backend: Database, Auth and Functions
This is where Base44 stands out. Every app gets a managed database, user registration and login, file storage and real-time updates without any setup. On the Builder plan and higher, you can also add backend functions for things like webhooks, scheduled tasks and calls to external APIs. You don't need to connect Supabase, Firebase or any other service.
Integrations
Base44 includes ready-made integrations for sending emails and push notifications, generating images, videos and speech, transcribing audio, extracting data from uploaded files, and calling AI models. They use integration credits from your plan. You can also connect Stripe for payments (Builder plan and higher) and apps like Google Calendar, Gmail, Slack, Notion, HubSpot and Salesforce.
AI Models
Base44 picks the AI model automatically on every plan. On the Builder plan and higher, you can choose the model yourself, including Base44's own Base 1 model and models from Anthropic, Google and OpenAI.
Code Editing, GitHub and Base Code
From the Starter plan, you can edit the generated code inside Base44. On the Builder plan and higher, you can sync the code to GitHub or download it as a ZIP file. In September 2026, Base44 also launched Base Code, which lets you work on an existing GitHub project with the AI.
Important: according to Base44's own documentation, the managed hosting, authentication system and database can't be exported. You can take the frontend code with you, but moving a whole app away from Base44 means rebuilding the backend.
Custom Domains, SEO and Analytics
Paid plans let you connect your own domain with automatic SSL, and annual plans include a free domain for the first year. Base44 also has built-in analytics and an SEO dashboard for published apps.
Mobile Apps
Base44 apps work on phones as progressive web apps that users can add to their home screen. On the Builder plan and higher, Base44 can generate the files you need to submit an app to the Apple App Store and Google Play. Native features like in-app purchases and offline mode aren't supported.
Superagents
Superagents, launched in 2026, are AI agents you create by describing them in plain English. They can run on schedules or triggers, remember context and talk to you through WhatsApp or Telegram, for example to send a daily summary or follow up on leads.
Security Scan
Every plan includes a security scan that checks your app for exposed secrets, weak data permissions, unprotected functions and other common problems. It's a useful safety net for people who don't know what to look for.
Base44 Pricing
Base44 has a free plan and five paid plans. These are the prices per month when billed annually (October 2026). Monthly billing costs about 20% more.
- Free ($0): 25 message credits per month (max 5 per day), 100 integration credits, up to 5 apps, database, auth and analytics
- Starter ($16): 100 message credits, 2,000 integration credits, unlimited apps, custom domain, code editing, option to remove the Base44 badge
- Builder ($40): 250 message credits, 10,000 integration credits, backend functions, GitHub and code export, Stripe, model selection, app store files
- Pro ($80): 500 message credits, 20,000 integration credits, early access to beta features
- Elite ($160): 1,200 message credits and up, 50,000 integration credits and up, premium support
- Business and Enterprise: SSO, EU or UK data residency, backups, role-based permissions and more for teams
Check the current prices on the Base44 pricing page.
How Base44 Credits Work
Base44 uses two kinds of credits:
- Message credits are used when you build with the AI. A small change costs about half a credit, a new feature about one, and a big change across the app three to four. Discuss mode costs about 0.3 credits per message.
- Integration credits are used by your published app when it sends emails, generates images or calls AI models. Database reads and writes are free, and calls to external services with your own API key don't use integration credits.
Credits reset every month, and unused credits don't roll over. When you run out of message credits, you can't continue building with the AI until the next month or until you upgrade. Your published apps stay online.
Which Plan Do You Need?
The free plan is enough to try Base44 and build a simple prototype. For a real project, Builder is the practical starting point, because it unlocks backend functions, Stripe payments and GitHub export. Starter works for simple apps that don't need those.
Tip: Base44's terms say payments are generally non-refundable, and you can't switch from an annual plan back to monthly yourself. Start with monthly billing until you're sure Base44 fits your project.
Base44 Pros and Cons
Pros
- Everything in one place: database, auth, storage, functions and hosting with no setup
- Very fast from idea to a working, published app (about four minutes in my test)
- The AI agent tests its own work, and it caught a bug in its own chart code
- Useful built-in integrations, including email, AI, file processing and Stripe
- Visual editor and Discuss mode help you save credits
- Security scan on all plans
- Backed by Wix, with fast product development
Cons
- Credits run out quickly on lower plans, especially when the AI needs several attempts to fix a bug. The free plan's daily limit ran out after three prompts in my test.
- The AI can miss logic errors and report work it didn't do, so you need to test the app yourself
- Backend, database and hosting can't be exported, so you're tied to Base44
- GitHub export, backend functions and Stripe require the Builder plan
- Servers are in the US by default; EU data residency only on Business and Enterprise
- Mixed user reviews about billing and support
What Users Say About Base44
User opinions are divided. On Trustpilot, Base44 has a TrustScore of 2.8 out of 5 from more than 900 reviews (October 2026). About a third of reviewers give five stars, while about half give one star.
- Praise: non-technical users can build working apps quickly, and the platform is easy to use.
- Complaints: the AI sometimes breaks features that worked before, credits are used up fixing the AI's own mistakes, and some users report problems with annual charges, cancellations and refunds.
My takeaway: Base44 works best when you keep prompts small and specific, test after every change, and export your code early if the project is important.
My own test matched both sides. Building was fast and easy, but fixing two bugs in the AI's first version cost more credits than the first build itself. I didn't pay for a plan, so I can't comment on billing or refunds.
Is Base44 Safe?
Base44 says it has SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certifications and is GDPR compliant. Servers are in the United States, and Business and Enterprise customers can choose EU or UK data residency for new apps.
In July 2025, security researchers at Wiz found a serious flaw that let outsiders register on private Base44 apps. Base44 fixed it within about a day, and Wix reported no evidence that it had been exploited. It's a reminder to run the security scan and check your app's permissions before you store sensitive data.
Also note that according to Base44's privacy documentation, your data may be used to train AI models on all plans except Enterprise. Read the current terms before you build anything confidential.
Base44 vs. Lovable and Other Alternatives
The closest competitor is Lovable, which I've reviewed in my Lovable review. The main difference is the approach to the backend and your code:
- Base44 gives you a fully managed backend with no setup, but the backend stays on Base44. Pricing is based on monthly message and integration credits.
- Lovable also has a built-in backend (Lovable Cloud) and syncs your code to GitHub on every plan, which makes it easier to move your project elsewhere later. Its paid plans start at $25 per month.
- Bolt and Replit are more developer-oriented and give you more control over the code and the stack.
If you want the simplest path to a working app with a backend, Base44 is hard to beat. If code ownership and portability matter most, Lovable is the safer choice.
Who Should Use Base44?
Base44 Is a Good Fit If You:
- Want to build a prototype, MVP or client demo fast
- Need internal tools, dashboards, booking systems or customer portals
- Aren't a developer and don't want to set up a database or hosting
- Can work within monthly credit limits
Look Elsewhere If You:
- Need full control and ownership of the backend and database
- Want to host the app on your own servers
- Need native mobile features like in-app purchases or offline mode
- Handle sensitive data and need EU hosting without a Business plan
Tips to Get More Out of Base44
- Plan with Discuss mode before you build, so you don't waste credits on rebuilds.
- Ask for one change at a time and test it before moving on.
- Test edge cases yourself, like deleting and editing records. The AI's own tests don't catch everything.
- Use the visual editor for text and design changes, because manual edits are free.
- Connect GitHub early if the app matters to you, so you always have a copy of the code.
- Run the security scan before you share the app or store personal data.
- If publishing doesn't go through, turn off your ad blocker for base44.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Base44 free?
Yes. The free plan includes 25 message credits per month (up to 5 per day) and lets you build up to five apps. In my test, one day's credits covered the first build and two changes. Paid plans start at $16 per month billed annually.
Is Base44 worth it?
For prototypes, internal tools and simple business apps, yes. It's one of the fastest ways to get a working app with a backend online. For long-term products where you need full code ownership, consider the export limits first.
Can I export my code from Base44?
Partly. On the Builder plan and higher, you can sync the code to GitHub or download it. The managed hosting, authentication system and database can't be exported.
Who owns Base44?
Wix. It acquired Base44 in June 2025, and Base44 continues to operate as its own product.
Is Base44 better than Lovable?
It depends on what you need. Base44 is easier if you want everything managed for you, while Lovable gives you more control over your code.
Can Base44 build mobile apps?
Base44 builds web apps that also work on phones. On the Builder plan and higher, it can generate the files for submitting your app to the App Store and Google Play, but native features like in-app purchases aren't supported.
Final Verdict
Base44 is one of the easiest ways to turn an idea into a working app in 2026. The built-in backend, integrations and one-click publishing make it especially useful for non-developers, founders and small businesses. The trade-offs are the credit limits and the fact that your backend stays on Base44.
After building an app on the free plan, I give Base44 4.0 out of 5. It's a good fit for non-technical people who want to build their own apps without touching code or servers. Developers who want full control will probably prefer other tools. The free plan is enough to test your idea and build a simple app, as long as you test the result yourself.
My advice: start with the free plan, build a small version of your idea, and upgrade to Builder when you need backend functions, payments or GitHub export. Try Base44 for free here.
